Do you sound like a salesperson?


Any high performer I've ever worked alongside all had one thing in common...



They didn't sound like salespeople.


- There was a richness to their voice.


- They were self assured.


- They approached every interaction with prospects as an equal.


- They had poise.


- They remained in control.


- They were congruent.


- They had absolute conviction.


No neediness.

No desperation.

No flapping.

No begging.


When I started out in sales my manager told me what my biggest problem was...


That I sounded like a salesperson.


So this was all I really worked on -


My Tone.


During my early 20s I trained as an actor.


And this became, by far, THE most important thing.


I became obsessed.


I began to master tonality in different situations.


I worked in a sales role alongside acting school to pay for my tuition fees.


So I could practice every single day on prospects.


And it really didn't surprise me that I was earning far more than I ever had before.


Every interaction, every cold call, every sales meeting became an acting scene.


It made my sales job so much more interesting...


- I would become a chameleon with different personality types.


- I had the ability to assert myself with strong D personalities.


- I knew when to tone things down with a steady or more cautious prospect.


- I began to understand exactly what worked and what didn't.


And I've never looked back since.


Improving your tone requires a shift in your mindset, beliefs, behaviour and habits.


And it's closely aligned with emotional intelligence.


The good news is all if this can be worked on and improved.


The first step is self-awareness.


Now that I spend almost all my time coaching salespeople...I can tell straight away what their biggest problem is.


And the words themselves are almost always secondary.
