"Take your sales role seriously but not yourself."

Sound advice I was given years ago.

But what exactly does it mean?

This would be my interpretation...

Taking your role seriously means to be professional.

It means putting your prospect's interests first by being objective, trustworthy and direct.

Telling them if you honestly believe it's not a good fit.

It means having self-respect as a salesperson, talking to prospective clients as an equal, and not becoming subservient.

It means bringing something of value, offering astute business acumen, and sharing insights.

In my eyes, not taking yourself seriously means to be human.

That is - imperfect, relatable, self-deprecating, funny, honest and down to earth.

Leaving behind any inflated ego or arrogance.

Anything else you would add?
