Don't ask this question

"Is this your decision?"

A decision-maker will rarely admit it's their call.

A non decision-maker will usually say 'yes it's up to them'.

So instead ask: "Who's typically involved in the decision-making process?"

Shifting from a personally directed question to an objectively framed one takes ego out the equation and prevents actual decision makers from being put on the spot.
