I also came across this statistic recently through Will Kimmel...Scary stuff.
In terms of the answer, I'm not sure anyone has a silver bullet.
As a start, here are a few ideas to consider:
1- Lower targets across the board (not sure many companies would jump at this!)
2 - A huge drive to upskill salespeople through embedded coaching programs to achieve consistency
3 - More effective sales management equipped with coaching abilities for continuous development
4 - A robust sales competency framework for recruiting the very best talent
5 - Integrating a more dynamic sales process & methodology which is industry specific
6 - A different performance measurement altogether (love to hear some new ideas on this)
