Sales Call!

I received a call from an unknown number on the train the other day...



It turned out to be a guy who's been trying to sell me SEO services.


I hadn't replied to his last email.


He came on the line and when I realised who it was that 'thing' happened...


almost like an inaudible sigh, as the reptilian brain kicks in with suggestions of how to get rid of said person without having to justify yourself.


As a sales coach I love being in the position of buyer, because when I reflect I know what would've worked more effectively on me in that moment.


If he'd said:


"Hi Scott, I haven't heard back so I assume any SEO work is off the table?"


...that would've got more of an honest response.


I find SEO almost ephereal...you think it may or may not work so you proceed to kick the can down the road.


So if he'd called the elephant in the room (i.e. no response to last email) I'd have been more likely to have been direct on the spot.


He'd had given me license to do so.


But in the moment, caught off guard & on a busy train, I said to call me next week.


At which point I'll level with him - but he could've got there sooner by being more assertive & by calling the elephant in the room.


I'll most likely share these thoughts when we next speak...but who knows, he may lead me towards the promised land with insight and I might just buy!
