Sales Director:
"Anyone who doesn't have 4 meetings scheduled every day will need to stay behind at the end of the morning sales meeting and explain to me why."
Next morning's sales meeting...
Everyone has at least 4 meetings apart from Elliott.
He has 3.
"But I have 8 booked in for Wednesday and 6 for Thursday - do I still have to stay behind?" he asks.
Sales Director: "Yes."
"Er why?"
"Because you have 3 today."
"That makes zero sense."
"I don't care - you're staying behind."
Elliot:
"So what are we going to talk about? It can't be about how to book meetings - I'm already on target for the week.
Perhaps you wanted to discuss how to evenly distribute them across 5 days?"
SD: "Careful"
Elliot:
"I tell you what I'll call every one of my 14 booked meetings and see if any of them will move to today...and if they do we don't have to meet. Sound good?"
"That's not the point..."
"So what is the point? The 'lost art' of having an even distribution of meetings across the week?"
"Rules are in place for a reason..."
God I miss those sales meetings.
