Worst sales advice ever?

'Just be yourself"

People will argue you have to be 'authentic' & genuine - and that anything else is fake.

However...

The two are not mutually exclusive.

You can be authentic and at the same time adaptable.

We all wear different masks for different people & situations every single day.

You don't speak to your boss the same way you'd speak to your mate down the pub.

You don't speak to the plumber in the same way you'd speak to your daughter.

In sales, every buyer you engage with is different.

There are different personality types requiring a different style of communication.

It's not disingenuous to adapt yourself so that someone understands something to a greater extent.

Would it not be doing both yourself and your buyer a massive disservice if you rub them up the wrong way...and as a result they shut down?

Meaning there's little chance of them opening up to you, so you can help guide them to solve their biggest problems.

We're all chameleons with different sides to our personalities.

We just have to tune in to the correct one for the correct situation.

That is...being the best version of yourself in the context of who you're speaking with.

Being the same person for everyone you meet isn't authentic - it's just lazy, complacent or arrogant.

Most likely accompanied by a mindset of "well if they don't like it that's their problem..."

It demonstrates a complete lack of emotional intelligence and self awareness.

Not the most conducive attitude to have for making sales & doing business.

Always bring your best self forward - and watch as people start to lean in.
